Bobby is too hard-headed to disappear. Too comfortable with being right where he's at. Take that! All of you who thought you were finally going to get rid of the old grouch.

New Years one-shot || For the broken hearted, battle scarred, I'll be by your side [Feb. 14th, 2009|08:04 pm]

These boys were going to be the death of him someday.

Stubborn. That's what they were, the entire Winchester bunch. It'd all started with John, but it hadn't stopped there. No sir. Dean and Sam had both inherited their father's stubborn streak. Lucky him. Trying to talk some sense into these two knuckleheads was nearly impossible. One wanted to go one way. The other wanted to do somethin' else. Then of course they wanted him to be the tie breaker. Forget that. They both had some valid points and some not so valid points.

He was kind of like a self-appointed referee. Sure, they'd tried to ditch him a few times, but he always kept coming back, whether they liked it or not. No way was he leaving them on their own.

As frustrating as they were, they were the only family he had, and he wasn't about to lose them. That's why he devoted every waking hour he didn't spend babysitting one and/or both of those crazy kids to finding a way to reintegrate Dean, sorta speak. That magic dust or whatever the heck it was that Ruby had given Dean had been working so far, but Bobby didn't like relying on some demon to provide a miracle cure. B'sides, she'd said it was only temporary - that's assuming they could trust her. Sam sure thought they could, but let's face it, the boy was desperate. He'd try anything to save his brother. Anything. Not good. 'Cause then instead of having to pull just one of the remaining Winchesters back away from the edge, he'd have to guide them both back to safety - or sanity, whichever came first.

The never-ending drama saga wore on Bobby's nerves, making him grumpier than usual, but he stuck around anyway. For the most part, he was able to stay calm. He had to. He was the only one around here who was keeping a level head about things. Though don't think he didn't give them a good scolding whenever he thought they needed an earful. They weren't getting off the hook that easily. They seemed to respond better to it. Guess they were used to getting barked at by their old man. John had been a good guy: strong, smart, and well-intentioned, but he had a mean temper. So did Bobby, so they'd clashed on many occasions. Thing is, these two had a way of working you: making you feel sorry for them so the lecturing would stop.

Bottom line was Sam was worried about Dean, and Dean was worried about Sam. Bobby was worried about them both. So when they each asked him to spy on their other half, what was he supposed to do? Now if he could split himself in two, that'd be handy. A pretty neat trick on top of that. Apparently that's what they thought: that he could be in two places at once. Or maybe they both just thought he'd side with them.

Couldn't live with 'em. Couldn't live without 'em. That about summed it all up.

So what dumb thing had they done this time? Since they weren't currently working on a case ( other than Dean's ), they wanted to take the night off, pig out, and sit up till midnight to watch some stupid ball drop on tv. Talk about a waste of time. What did they plan on doing until the clock struck twelve: sitting and staring at each other? Yeah. Sounded like a blast. He'd opted to go buy beer, maybe some whiskey too. He needed something a little stronger if he was supposed to get through this night. Chances are he'd end up turning in early and letting those two do whatever it is they did to keep themselves entertained. Although if he heard fighting, he'd be back over here in a flash to pull them apart.

Oh, but don't think they were nice enough to let him slip away that easily. By the time he finally got out of there, he had a list a mile long. Most of the items on it were requests of Dean's. That boy could put away some food. Where it went, who knew. Sam was the one who'd shot up there like a weed, and he barely touched anything. Sometimes they had to persuade him to stop whatever he was doing and eat a decent meal. He got all wrapped up in other stuff and literally forgot that every body needed to be fed at least once or twice a day.

Sheesh. Let's hope he could find all this junk. Burgers, fries, potato skins, buffalo wings, pie ... what kind of list was this? The wise-guy had even ranked the importance of each on a scale from one to ten - which meant that on some lines, he'd squeezed in more than one snack or drink. Might need to rent a U-haul to fit all this in ...

All complaints aside, it wasn't a task he couldn't handle.

Once he got back from the store ( hours later, thanks to having to make multiple stops to get everything ), he found them swapping corny 'remember when' stories. Naturally they picked the stupidest ones they could think of.

"Not that one again."

Was it just him, or did they keep repeating the same ole' tales?

What a couple of morons.

But at least they were on their best behavior ( a little suspicious, if you asked him ), so he didn't complain too much: just reclined back and watched them prove his theory that no matter how old they got or how many hardships they faced, they'd always be two of the biggest dorks he'd ever come across.

After several glasses of whiskey and stuffing himself full, Bobby dozed off in the chair - and not a moment too soon. Dean had just suggested a game of truth or dare.
